The Araponga, one of the loudest species of birds in the world

About the piece

Trumpet player Zach Buie and I have been talking about working together for over a year now and we are excited to launch a Commissioning Consortium for the creation of a new 6-8 minute piece for solo trumpet and fixed electronics with Zach as the lead commissioner.

I am currently living in a rural part of Brazil which is home to one of the loudest species of bird known, the Araponga (also known as the bellbird). Its call is a metallic sound with an incredibly rich harmonic spectrum. When I floated the idea of a piece related to the Araponga to Zach and found out that he and his wife are birders, it seemed like it was meant to be.

I also love the sound of a very quiet trumpet. I remember being completely blown away by hearing trumpet player Dave Ballou play for the first time because of an incredibly quiet but full sound he made during part of the set. I had never heard a trumpet sound like that before. This new work will be an exploration of loudness and quietness, delving into both extremes of the dynamic range. I plan to sample the Araponga in the fixed electronics part of the composition and I will also research some of Zach’s favorite birds from the Boise area. The rest has yet to be discovered.

Stats: 6-8 minutes long, solo trumpet plus fixed electronics, created by August 1, 2021
