1 in 10,000 (2018)
for Wind Ensemble and pre-recorded Electronics
Program Note
1 in 10,000 is about the famous Idaho star garnet and unfolds in 4 continuous sections:
I.Emerald Creek
II.Grinding and Polishing
III.The Star
IV.Being Here
The pre-recorded electronics include snippets from interviews about the star garnet with geologists Emily Forsberg and Mickey Gunter; Bill Mabbutt and Mogli Samter from Gem State Crystals in downtown Moscow, ID; Rachel, a National Forest Service employee from the Emerald Creek Mining area; and the most dedicated rock hound I know, my dad, Brian Fulton. This project was made possible by a Seed Grant from the University of Idaho Office of Research and Economic Development. I in 10,000 is dedicated to Alan Gemberling and the 2018 University of Idaho Wind Ensemble.
Listen to the premiere performance of “! in 10,000” from the celebration concert for the retirement of long-time University of Idaho faculty member and conductor of the Wind Ensemble, Alan Gemberling:
